Picture this. You are a stage hand working behind the scenes for a theater company. Each night, you watch the actors take their bows and receive credit for their work but no one really notices your contribution. Long after the curtain closes, the audience remembers the actors but never the stage hand.
Sometimes I struggle with the answers to these questions: Is it okay with me when I receive little recognition for my efforts? Am I content with my hard work if no one but the Lord Jesus knows about it?
When I find myself wanting to make sure others know about my efforts and accomplishments, I remember the following words: Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; someone else, and not your own lips. (Proverbs 27:2)
What about this scenario? You are the actor in the spotlight, with each adoring eye locked on your every move. Night after night, at the conclusion of each show, the entire audience leaps to its feet with resounding applause.
The questions continue: Do I believe that the praises of men make me who I am? Do I secretly live for the approval of others?
Paul’s cautionary words convict my spirit. Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ. (Galatians 1:10)
Sometimes we are in the background and sometimes we find ourselves front and center. My struggle in both of these scenarios is the same—in my heart do I want the glory for myself or for my Lord? If I am being honest, the former is the case most of the time.
I find that this is a constant struggle in my heart as I long for the approval of others. But all of man’s praise when received is ultimately empty. I believe that a life that belongs to Jesus will lead the way to Him. Instead of seeking a response of “good job” from others, we should desire others to say, “Praise the Lord!”
Ultimately, it is the Lord who deserves all praise, glory, and honor. When we praise Him, we are truly giving credit where credit is due.
Not to us, O Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness. (Psalm 115:1)
